What You'll Be Doing

As an Instrument Engineer, you will be responsible for supervising and providing technical direction to a team of engineers and designers in a leadership capacity. Your primary focus will be overseeing the delivery of electrical and instrumentation design and services for industrial power systems. This includes ensuring all deliverables are produced on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and approving all electrical and instrumentation deliverables.
  • Developing and validating professional service and construction estimates.
  • Managing design criteria, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal standards and codes.
  • Tracking and maintaining the project’s budget, schedule, and quality standards.
  • Delegating work to engineers and designers based on their technical experience and skills.
  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality.
  • Producing detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction.
  • Ensuring all engineering designs meet client expectations, emphasizing ease of construction and operational efficiency.
  • Reviewing and checking vendor and discipline drawings for electrical/instrumentation input.
  • Producing bid packages for material procurement and subcontract pricing.
  • Planning training programs and promoting professional development for staff.
  • Leading cross-functional teams to meet scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
  • Contributing to the development of engineering deliverables, proposals, and cost studies.

Ideal Background

Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.

Certifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License is highly preferred.

Experience:

  • 15+ years of industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
  • Expertise in industrial power systems, including familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, Microstation), and advanced knowledge of electrical installation documents and power system designs.
  • Experience in sizing wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for power and lighting applications.
  • Familiarity with 15kV power systems and equipment installation techniques.
  • Strong project management skills, including estimating costs, preparing engineering schedules, and tracking performance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of power systems, equipment specifications, and installations.
  • Experience in developing 15kV/5kV electrical equipment specifications (switchgear, motor control centers, etc.).
  • Ability to produce detailed designs, layouts, and specifications for various electrical components.
  • Skilled in voltage drop calculations, lighting level calculations, and motor control center loading.
  • Experience with material take-offs, cost estimation, and project budgeting.
  • Familiarity with project control tools to track budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Ability to lead a team and ensure efficient delivery of engineering services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining control over engineering tasks and deliverables.
